APPLICATION CRITERIA

Qualifying Criteria

To qualify for funding your organization must first meet all of the following six criteria.

  • 501(C)(3) Nonprofit Status

    The organization has active nonprofit tax exemption status under Internal Revenue Service code 501(c)(3).

  • Financial Transparency

    The organization’s 990 tax forms for the last two years are available online or readily available upon request.

  • Funding for Children

    The program for which the organization seeks funding will DIRECTLY benefit youth ages K-12.

  • Kansas City Impact

    The funding the organization seeks will directly impact children in the Greater Kansas City community.

  • Arts, Education & Health

    The program applying for funding falls under one of the following areas: Arts, Education, Health, Welfare.

  • Budget Form Submission

    The applicant has filled out the budget form and attached it to the application.

Disqualifying Criteria

Funding will not be provided for any of the following purposes:

  • No Wages Paid

    No wages/salaries/stipends will be paid to any teacher, para teacher, doctor, nurse, therapist, director, instructor, independent contractor or student of any kind.

  • ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE NOT SUBMITTED THEIR PRIOR YEAR REPORT ON TIME

  • OPERATING OR INDIRECT EXPENSES

    This includes mileage, trainings, reimbursements, installation and shipping fees.

  • STUDENT TRIPS & CULTURAL EXCHANGES

  • RELIGIOUS / PRIVATE SCHOOLS

  • RESEARCH, POLLS & STUDIES

  • ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIPS

  • BUILDING FUNDS FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

  • MAINTENANCE OF BUILDINGS

  • FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

    Such as event sponsorships, benefits, dinners, galas, sporting events, seminars and symposia.

  • INDIVIDUALS

  • UNIVERSITY COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH, NAMED ACADEMIC CHAIRS, OR ENDOWMENTS

  • ANY TYPE OF PASS-THROUGH FUNDING

  • Additionally, organizations that can be described as any of the following will also be disqualified:

  • GOVERNMENT-SUPPORTED ORGANIZATIONS

  • LABOR UNION

  • ORGANIZATIONS WHOSE MEMBERSHIP IS LIMITED BY RACE, RELIGION, GENDER OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION

  • POLITICAL OR LOBBYING ORGANIZATION

  • INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT PRIMARILY SUPPORT PROGRAMS OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES

  • ORGANIZATIONS WITHOUT A UNIQUE 501C3 DESIGNATION FUNCTIONING UNDER A FISCAL SPONSOR

If any portion of the disqualification criteria fairly characterizes your organization, your application to the Edward G. & Kathryn E. Mader Foundation will be automatically disqualified. In addition, organizations that do not provide the Edward G. & Kathryn E. Mader Foundation budget template in their application will also be red-flagged.

No. To ensure equity in all applications, the Foundation does not provide guidance on applications. We encourage you to apply where your need is greatest and fits best with our criteria.

No. Only one grant per organization will be considered at this time.

The Edward G. & Kathryn E. Mader Foundation does not fund any type of salary.

No. Distributions are to be made annually from the foundation.

No. A new request should be submitted each year.

All proposals will be treated equally regardless of entry date.

Yes, but please include your agency’s Guidestar identification number along with the Guidestar url.

No. All initial applications must be received via the application page no later than May 1. The application page will be shut down immediately following May 1st and no applications will be allowed to enter through the system.

Yes. If the existing program fits within the current guidelines.
