Our Grant Making Criteria

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. These criteria change from time to time.

To qualify for funding your organization must first meet all of the following 5 criteria:

  1. The organization has nonprofit tax exemption status under Internal Revenue Service code 501(c)(3).
  2. The organization's 990 tax forms for the last three years are available online or readily available upon request.
  3. The program for which the organization seeks funding will DIRECTLY benefit youth.
  4. The funding the organization seeks will directly impact Greater Kansas City.
  5. The program for which the organization seeks funding falls under one of the following areas: Arts, Education, Health, Welfare.
  6. Failure to meet any of the above criteria will automatically disqualify your organization's application to the Mader Foundation.

    Further, the organization will NOT be funded if any of the following 3 are true:

  7. The organization seeks funding for one or more of the following purposes:
    • Student trips and cultural exchanges
    • Association memberships
    • Building funds for educational institutions, including capital campaigns
    • Direct support to elementary and secondary schools to support basic operations
    • Maintenance of school buildings
    • PAYMENT OF OR AUGMENTING OF THE SALARIES OF TEACHERS
    • Other expenses related to the direct education mission of the school that are supported by federal, state or local taxes)
    • Fundraising activities, such as event sponsorships, benefits, dinners, galas, sporting events, seminars and symposia
    • Good-will advertising
    • Individuals
    • Political campaigns or candidates
    • University collaborative research, named academic chairs or endowments
    • Operating support for colleges and universities
    • Operating support for United Way-funded agencies.
  8. The organization can be described as one or more of the following:
    • Fraternal, social or veterans group
    • Government-supported organization
    • Labor union
    • Organization whose membership is limited by race or religion
    • Political or lobbying organization
    • International organization that primarily supports charitable programs outside the United States
  9. The organization has received funding from the Mader Foundation in the previous two consecutive years.

If any portion of items 6, 7 or 8 fairly characterizes your organization your application to the Mader Foundation will be automatically disqualified.
